FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST - The Kern County Sheriff's Office Coroner Section is seeking a full time Forensic Pathologist to join our current staff of two full time Forensic Pathologists. The Coroner's Facility is located at the Southern end of the San Joaquin Valley approximately two hours drive north of Los Angeles in beautiful Bakersfield California. Kern County is the third largest geographical county in the state of California, covering approximately 8,200 squares miles. Bakersfield has a population of about 400,000 and is the county seat. The County of Kern has a total population of approximately 750,000. In 2008, the Sheriff's Coroner's Section had approximately 2077 reportable cases and conducted approximately 800 examinations, including 63 homicides.

SALARY RANGE: $210,000-$253,000 yearly based on experience and qualifications. The Forensic Pathologist position is an independent contract position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Pathologist responsibilities include performing medico legal examinations including autopsies and external examinations, providing cause and manner of death of those deaths coming under the jurisdiction of the Coroner, and prepare detailed autopsy and external examination reports. The pathologist must have skills necessary to consult with attorneys, physicians, and law enforcement, as well as, be able to respond to death scenes when requested. The pathologist will provide expert testimony before the Grand Jury and in criminal proceedings regarding cases performed while employed as the Kern County Coroner Office pathologist when required. The pathologist may also be asked to conduct or participate in in-service training for law enforcement and associated agencies as needed as well as consult from a pathology perspective on emergency response and pandemic issues and assist as a liaison with organ and tissues procurement organizations.

WORKLOAD: 250-350 cases per year plus administrative duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Anatomic or Anatomic and Clinical Certification from the American Board of Pathology, and Forensic Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification is required. Forensic Pathology Certification must be obtained within three years from date of hire. Must have or be prepared to obtain medical licensure in California and obtain a valid California Driver License.

FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST - The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner is seeking applicants for an additional position of Forensic Pathologist. The Coroner Bureau operates out of two state of the art facilities in southern California, in the cities of Perris and Indio. The population of Riverside County recently surpassed 2 million.

The progressive management team is looking for an enthusiastic pathologist to assist with the ongoing development of a nationally recognized program in forensic pathology. The pathologist will join the forensic division based in Perris that currently includes the chief forensic pathologist and three county based pathologists. In addition, the majority of autopsy support for the Desert Forensic Center in Indio is provided by a desert based pathologist. In 2006, 1435 forensic autopsies were performed countywide by the Coroner Bureau. Excellent ancillary support is provided by on site neuropathologists and an anthropologist, and contract dentists regularly assist in the identification of decedents.

The main office in Perris is located 60 miles east of Los Angeles, 45 miles northeast of the beach cities of neighboring Orange County, and 90 miles north of San Diego. The western end of Riverside County is home to the culturally developing city and county seat of Riverside and to Temecula Valley wineries, festivals and the Pechanga casino. The cost of living is considerably less than many of the neighboring areas of southern California.

The Desert Forensic Center in Indio serves the eastern portion of Riverside County, covering approximately 25% of the forensic death investigations. The Coachella Valley’s desert cities are the host of many athletic and cultural events to include professional golf and tennis tournaments. The desert cities offer many fine resort hotels, dining establishments, casinos, golf courses and outdoor activities. In addition to popularity as a vacation spot, the Coachella Valley offers both family and retirement style living.

To be considered for employment, the applicant must be board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and must have successfully completed a forensic pathology fellowship program. To maintain employment, it is expected that the pathologist obtain board certification by the American Board of Pathology in forensic pathology within the eligibility period.

Riverside County offers an attractive benefit package. Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience as follows:

Forensic Pathologist III: $153,512 - $161,927
(Board eligible or board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology)

Forensic Pathologist IV: $161,912 - $170,788
(Board certified in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology)
